What Airplane Mode Actually Changes on Your Phone

Airplane mode looks like a single on-off switch, but modern phones have several separate wireless systems. Turning the setting on does not necessarily make the phone completely radio-silent, and it does not stop apps or the phone itself from working. The useful mental model is simple: airplane mode changes wireless connections, not the entire device. It primarily prevents the phone from using its normal cellular connection and changes the state of other radios such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. On many current devices, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can then be enabled again while airplane mode remains active.

What Airplane Mode Does on Your Phone

Airplane mode is a phone setting that quickly disables wireless radios used for cellular communication. It was created to make it easy to comply with rules for personal electronic devices during flights, but it is also useful in several everyday situations. The name can make the feature sound more absolute than it is. Turning on airplane mode does not shut down the phone, erase network settings, or necessarily prevent every form of wireless communication. On modern phones, you can often enable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth again while airplane mode remains active.
